Movie Recommendation // Snowpiercer

It's been quite a while since I did a movie recommendation post, but I've been meaning to share quite a few with you all!  Today's recommendation is for a really great film titled Snowpiercer.  I will admit that before I watched it, I knew absolutely nothing about it other than the fact that I hoped it would be better than the name.  For some reason, the title was really silly sounding to me.  Boy am I glad I didn't judge the movie by the title.  It's excellent!

Plot Summary from IMDB:

Set in a future where a failed climate-change experiment kills all life on the planet except for a lucky few who boarded the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe, where a class system emerges.

Alright so first things first: the cast.  The cast for this is FANTASTIC!!  Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, and Ed Harris?!  Jeeez!  I totally did not recognize Chris Evans in the very beginning, but let me tell you...black bearded and dirty is a really good look for him (I know what you're thinking...what ISN'T a good look for him right?  Seriously though.)  Tilda Swinton always blows me away, but her performance as a dorky evil bitch villain is simply amazing.  You'll love hating her-I promise.

Also...this sweet bubbly school teacher is fucking nuts.  Sorry, I know this photo seems out of place, but I couldn't do this recommendation without an image of her.

So aside from the cast, what did I love so much about Snowpiercer?  The colors, cinematography, and plot.  I'm gonna repeat myself and say that not only was I skeptical that this film was going be any good after reading the title, but after reading the synopsis...I was almost sure that it was too outrageous to pull off.  You've basically got an apocalyptic dystopian society on a never ending train ride from hell where the leader has taken it upon him/herself to separate it's passengers into a caste system and things get BAD.  Really really bad.

This is Chris Evan's after finding out that you haven't seen this film....so go watch it!! :)

Already seen Snowpiercer?  I'd love to know your thoughts on it!!!

Movie Recommendation: The Hunt

Today's movie recommendation is a really great film out of Denmark titled The Hunt.  It's up for Best Foreign Language Film this year at the Oscars too, so don't just take my word for it...this film is REALLY GOOD!

Plot Summary from IMDB:
A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

I came across this movie while browsing works by Mads Mikkelsen on IMDB.  Mads is on my favorite actors list, which you can see here if you missed it!  I get really excited when I find out that one of my favorites is coming out with something new, and after reading the story-line for this one...I was hooked.  Then I watched the trailer on YouTube...and I was REALLY hooked!  As soon as I could, I make a trip to the nearest Movie Trading Co to see if they had it in stock...and they did!  Yessssss!

First off, I want to take a tiny moment to acknowledge Annika Wedderkopp's performance as Klara in the film.  I am always completely blown away by child actors who can gracefully pull through a movie full of such difficult subject matter as this one.  She did an AMAZING job and her character was SO believable!

Okay so now on to WHY I loved this film so much.  The story-line is what initially pulled me in.  Everything is seemingly going well for the lead character, Lucas, until one of his students accuses him of sexual abuse.  I won't give anything away, except that in my opinion...the way the situation was handled from the start was terribly wrong.  If you watch it (which I think you should!!!  Do it now!!!), you'll see what I mean.  It was frustrating to say the least.  Aside from the frustration, it really pulled me into the story and I just wanted to jump in there and do something to help.  It would be a lie if I told you you wouldn't be squirming in your seat and yelling things at your TV/computer screen haha!  You probably will.

Aside from the story-line and the fact that I love the two main characters of the film, I really enjoyed the cinematography, music, and shooting locations. Absolutely beautiful.

Oh and guess what!  It's available on Netflix!!!

If you do decide to watch it, I'd love to know your thoughts on it!

Movie Recommendation: Only God Forgives

I hope to make movie recommendations a regular feature here on Oh Rocky...at least once a month!  I know how much I appreciate finding out about great movies I might have otherwise missed out on, so I thought it would be a great idea to share some with you guys!  I mean...it would be so majorly selfish of me to keep all the movie magic to myself right?  The types of films I'll share could be anything from animated films to horror films and everything in between.  So let's get started!

Today I'm sharing the crime/drama/thriller:  Only God Forgives

All I knew about this movie before watching it was that it starred Ryan Gosling (um...yes please!) and was directed by the same guy (Nicolas Winding Refn) who did Drive.  I didn't know his name then, but I certainly do now!

Only God Forgives is colorful, violent, and dark with low dialogue and some really interesting/beautiful music throughout.  I will admit that this probably isn't the safest film for me to debut my "Movie Recommendation" feature considering it's an art-house film with generally low ratings, but it's the most recent film I've watched and really really loved.  It's definitely not your mainstream "let's go the the movies this Friday" film, so please...if you watch it...don't go into it with that mindset.  If, on the other hand, you're into films that are a bit...different, you may enjoy this one.

Plot Summary from IMDB:
Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a man and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty. When Julian's brother murders an underage prostitute, the police call on retired cop Chang - the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter's murderer, then 'restores order' by chopping off the man's right hand. Julian's mother Crystal - the head of a powerful criminal organization - arrives in Bangkok to collect her son's body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and 'raise hell'.

You can check out the trailer here.

If you watch it I'd love to hear what you thought about it!
