Things I Wanna Learn // 2 // Tattoo Flash Art

Stay Royal Print by Quyen Dinh at Parlor Tattoo Prints
I haven't always been attracted to the Flash style of tattoo.  As a matter of fact, none of my current tattoos are flash.  I haven't gotten a new tattoo in over 2 years, but over time I have become more and more attracted to the style.  I don't know that I would ever be comfortable enough to actually be an artist behind a tattoo gun, but I would love to start drawing and painting tattoo flash!

I recently registered for an online Watercolors 101 course that starts May 1st at Nicoles Classes, and I'm really excited about learning watercolor techniques.  I have absolutely no experience with them, but they've always appealed to me.  Not sure why I haven't gotten around to trying them....but I'm really looking forward to it!  After doing a bit of research, I've decided that after completing the course, I'm going to switch to Acrylic Ink Paints which behave very much like watercolors, but apparently they're more vibrant!

I've been so inspired by so many flash artists lately, but I've fallen completely in love with everything by Quyen Dinh of Parlor Tattoo Prints:

After getting permission from the artist, I've decided I'm going to get  The Shining one as well as the Pennywise one this year as part of a sleeve project.  I would love to work on my own flash designs and come up with a Hannibal Lecter.  I think it would fit in nicely with the theme I'm going to go with.

What do you think of Flash Tattoos?

Things I Wanna Learn // 1 // Special Effects Makeup

There are SOOOO many things that I want to learn how to do and implement into my life, and at some point I really hope that I can fit it all in!  This will be a new series that could possibly go on FOREVER considering the amount of things I want to learn and do.  I also think it will be a really fun way to connect with readers who are interested in doing the same...or who already are!  So this week I'd like to share something that I've been wanting to do for quite a while now:

Special Effects Makeup!
Being the movie enthusiast that I am, it's only natural that special effects makeup is something that catches my eye.  The work and creativity that goes into creating characters like the ones above (all from the SyFy series Face Off) is utterly incredible!  I don't live anywhere near a FX Makeup School, but from the research that I've done, the online Dick Smith Makeup courses are top notch!  Once I move in with Matthew we will have a garage that we're going to dedicate a space in for FX projects!  I'm really excited about it.  The basic course fee is $350, so I have quite a bit to save up before I try it out.  Once you complete the basic course, you can apply for the advanced course.  I would love to progress to the point that I can volunteer at the bigger Haunted Houses around Fort Worth.  That would be so fun!  If this is something that you're also interested in, I highly recommend subscribing to Makeup Artist Magazine...it's fantastic!  Also, you MUST see SyFy's show Face Off!  I've been watching it obsessively since season 1 and it's one of my absolute favorite shows :)

Do you have a favorite movie character that involves special effects makeup?  I think mine might be Jim Carrey as the Grinch :)
