RIP: Philip Seymour Hoffman

As you may have heard, Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away yesterday, February 2, 2014, of an apparent drug overdose.  Having shared earlier last week that he's one of my favorite actors, I'm certainly saddened by such a significant loss of talent.  I know that it sometimes causes eye-rolling, confusion, or even anger when the death of a celebrity garners so much attention...because in reality...most of us don't actually KNOW them.  I didn't know him, and I don't want to sound sappy or make this a depressing sort of post, but it IS a loss for me.  Great movies are like great books.  Seeing a great film is a way of experiencing something new.  Feeling something you may not have felt before.  Considering an issue that you haven't really given a lot of thought to before.  I love to marvel at the talent of really great actors and actresses (and countless others involved in movie making), for their devotion and ability to bring characters, stories, and ideas to life and make you believe.  Philip Seymour Hoffman was one the greats.  He had a truly immense talent for bringing characters to life and for exuding real emotion on screen.  A true artist.  R.I.P.

"I think I would have drank myself to death, literally, if I didn't just stop, once and for all when I did. I am not ever going to preach to anyone about drugs or drinking. But, for me, when they were around, I had no self control."-Philip Seymour Hoffman (on quitting drinking at age 22).

  3. Such sad news, I just can't believe it. He was a great guy and it is just so sad what addictions can do.
